ales of single-family homes were
up only slightly last year, but the
median home price surged by $15,000,
to $215,000, well above pre-recession
levels. What's driving the increase is a
lack of inventory, an issue reinforced
by the Maine Association of Realtors'
monthly reports. Anecdotal stories of
bidding wars have become common,
and cash deals and house "flipping"
have reemerged, a reminder of earlier
housing booms. It's a seller's market,
but the persistent challenge is there's
not enough housing, particularly afford-
able housing.
