The name is different. It's now the Southborough Golf Club, with the new name starting last year. Its owner is now the town instead of the preparatory school for which it was named. The club - house has moved roughly 150 yards, and in its place is a $22.6-million, 26,000-square-foot brick facility – not the new club - house, but the town's new police and fire headquarters, which the town was able to find room through the golf course purchase and a land swap with St. Mark's. With a $4.5-million deal to buy the golf course, the town now controls the public nine-hole course off Cordaville Road, which opened this spring with the relo - cated clubhouse and temporary arrangements for the first hole's tee and the ninth hole's green. Designs are underway to remake both holes, with work to take place this fall to restore them to their normal length. In the meantime, golfers enjoy lower rates of $16 on weekdays and $19 on weekends, thanks to the inconvenience of the public safety facility construction and the two adjusted holes. For Southborough, buying the course allowed for land for a new public safety facility near the inter - section of routes 85 and 30. It was also a way of ensuring that the course's roughly 63 acres were kept undeveloped in an area of town between the town center and Route 9, with 90% of the land covered by a conservation restric - tion. For St. Mark's, a land swap with the town gave the school a larger contiguous footprint for potential expansion. The course was donated to St. Mark's in 1923 by the course founder, G.P. Gardner, who served on the school's board for many years. - Grant Welker Southborough buys St. Mark's Southborough Golf Club
