The manufacturer of fiber lasers is spending $70 million to expand its Oxford headquarters by about 600,000 square feet of office and parking garage space. A vacant facility next door was acquired last year for $26 million. IPG Photonics purchased a 107,000-square-foot facility in Marlborough for $21 million with plans to occupy the entire space once current leases expire. In its annual report in March, the company said it is planning 800,000 square feet of global expansions this year, including a $17-million project in the U.K. These expansions come as the company's stock price and reputa - tion are taking a hit thanks to actions by the U.S. government. For about a year, the compa- ny's stock price has hinged on the state of U.S. trade relations with China and President Donald Trump's reliance on tariffs to force China to the negotiating table. Those tariffs and China's coun - ter tariffs have hurt IPG's business in China and caused the compa- ny's share price to fall about 36% since last June. In court filings, the company said it is losing revenue and busi- ness because CEO Valentin Gapontsev is listed as a Russian oligarch by the U.S. Department of the Treasury. Gapontsev and the company are suing the department and are currently in mediation. Gapontsev, a Worcester resi - dent, claims he has no ties to the Russian government, but the com- pany does maintain a large pres- ence in Russia and other eastern European countries. - Zachary Comeau IPG grows amid uncertainty Valentin Gapontsev
