4 Worcester Business Journal | Book of Lists 2019 | wbjournal.com T en years ago, if Worcester Business Journal wanted to run a list of the top Central Massachusetts marijuana sellers in our Book of Lists, we would have reached out to city and state police departments – maybe even the U.S. Drug Enforcement Administration – to get arrest records and organized crime information. This year, for WBJ's first-ever marijuana businesses list (appearing on pages 68-69), all we had to do was reach out to the Massachusetts Department of Public Health and the Cannabis Control Commission. Thus is the nature of the evolving economy. Marijuana went from being a DEA Schedule 1 drug (consid- ered an equal to the likes of heroin, ecstasy and LSD) to becom- ing legal for Massachusetts medical use in 2013 and for recre- ational use in 2016. The first adult-use dispensaries opened in November. Although marijuana remains a Schedule 1 drug feder- ally, with the number of states legalizing its use, it seems only a matter of time before cannabis is 100% legal. The Massachusetts recreational marijuana industry remains rela- tively small, generating $163 million in statewide sales since November. By comparison, the manufacturing industry overall gen- erated $6.9 billion in economic output in Central Massachusetts alone in 2017. Still, seizing opportunity in the ever- evolving economy is all about understanding the changes, and marijuana's march toward legitimacy represents a para- digm shift in the region's thinking about the product. This year's Book of Lists has four other new lists among the 47 lists in its pages. In the Health Care section on pages 26-28, you will find two lists on accountable care organizations (ACOs), where the state and federal governments are matching insurers with healthcare providers to create better outcomes and cost efficiencies. Worcester insurer Fallon Health has seized on this opportunity to have a record number of members and revenue in 2018. New in the Tourism & Hospitality section on pages 86-87 are the region's entertainment and sports venues, which is a spinoff of the tourist attractions list (pages 84-85). The number of venues has increased in the last three years, but this new list is primed for Worcester's next big economic change, when the Pawtucket Red Sox begin playing in the $101-million Polar Park baseball stadium in 2021. WBJ's final new list this year is on page 42 in the Education section, listing the vocational technical high schools in the region. As more manufacturers are seeking potential employees with the technical skills necessary to meet their increasing demand, the vo-tech schools will play an important role. With 47 ever-changing lists, WBJ's Book of Lists is meant to be a year-round guide to help you improve your busi- ness. Through knowing the movers and shakers in each industry, understanding the changes within each business and having access to thousands of pieces of information, this publication will help you seize on any opportunity. - Brad Kane, editor C O N T E N T S Marijuana continues its march toward legitimacy BANKING & FINANCE ....................................... 13 Banks* .......................................................... 14 Credit unions ................................................. 20 Mergers & acquisitions* .................................. 22 SBA lenders .................................................... 24 SBA loans ...................................................... 25 HEALTH CARE ................................................... 27 MassHealth ACOs**......................................... 28 Medicare ACOs** ........................................... 30 Hospitals ....................................................... 32 Physician groups ............................................. 34 Addiction treatment centers ............................. 36 Health insurers................................................ 39 EDUCATION ....................................................... 41 Colleges & universities ................................... 42 Vo-tech high schools** .................................... 44 Private schools* .............................................. 45 REAL ESTATE .................................................... 49 Commercial leases* ....................................... 50 Commercial sales* .......................................... 53 Top taxpayers ................................................. 56 Green buildings .............................................. 57 Architectural firms ........................................... 58 Commercial contractors ................................. 61 MANUFACTURING & TECHNOLOGY .................. 65 Biomedical companies ................................... 66 Clean energy companies* ................................ 69 Manufacturers* ............................................... 70 Breweries ....................................................... 76 Marijuana businesses** ................................... 78 TOURISM & HOSPITALITY ................................ 81 Golf courses* .................................................. 82 Hotels ............................................................. 86 Meeting facilities* ........................................... 90 Tourist attractions ......................................... 100 Entertainment & sporting venues** ................ 102 Independent caterers .................................... 104 PROFESSIONAL SERVICES ............................. 107 Insurance agencies ....................................... 108 Law firms ..................................................... 110 Commercial cleaners* ................................... 112 Accounting firms ........................................... 114 Advertising & marketing firms ....................... 116 IT services providers* .................................... 120 GENERAL INTEREST ....................................... 125 Minority-owned businesses* .......................... 126 Highest-paid state employees ........................ 128 Highest-paid CEOs* ....................................... 130 Human service nonprofits .............................. 131 Highest-paid nonprofit executives* ................. 132 Private foundations ....................................... 135 Woman-owned businesses* .......................... 136 Incubators ................................................... 140 Co-working places & makerspaces ................ 141 Chambers of commerce ................................ 142 * see digital version for longer list ** debut list (INDEX BY INDUSTRY CATEGORY) Worcester Business Journal (ISSN#1063- 6595) is published bi-weeky, 24x per year, including 5 special issues in April, July, September, November and December, by New Engand Business Media. 172 Shrewsbury St., Worcester, MA 01604.
