There's been no escaping
Boston Scientific's acquisition
spree, with the Marlborough
medical device company bring-
ing so many other firms into the
fold it occupies five of the top
10 on this list.
Growing by acquisition puts
Boston Scientific at odds with
another Massachusetts corpo-
rate giant, General Electric,
which has been selling off parts,
and contrasts it a bit with those
who've merged with other major
firms as Waltham's Raytheon
has proposed with United
Technologies Corp. in
Connecticut.
Boston Scientific has been
growing rapidly in the time since
June when reports said Stryker,
a Michigan medical device
maker, was in talks to acquire
Boston Scientific.
An accounting of Boston
Scientific's buying binge starts
with a $4.2-billion purchase of
BTG, a British company that
develops and commercializes
products used in minimally inva-
sive procedures targeting can-
cer and vascular diseases.
Another major acquisition is
much closer to home, with
Bedford's Augmenix, a manu-
facturer and marketer of the
SpaceOAR System, a therapy
used to reduce common side
effects associated with prostate
cancer radiotherapy. Augmenix
was bought for $600 million.
A third acquisition takes
Boston Scientific to California,
about an hour north of San
Francisco. Boston Scientific said
late last year it would buy the
remainder of the company
Millipede it didn't already own
after the completion of a first-
in-human clinical study of a
product strengthening the ring
around a heart valve.
