The Institute of Living (IOL), a division of Hartford Hospital, announced it received the funding from the New York-based American Foundation for Suicide Prevention. The three-year study will be administered by Dr. David Tolin, director of the Anxiety Disorders Center and Center for Cognitive Behavioral Therapy at the IOL. As part of the study, the Institute will provide four private counseling sessions to patients with suicidal tendencies, with the aim of helping them better regulate their emotions and solve problems more effectively. Tolin said private interventions are a rarity for hospitals to offer. "We only have people for a very brief period of time," he said. "This study is specifically investigating brief cognitive behavior therapy to prevent successive suicide attempts for people who have already attempted suicide." Achieve Hartford received a $7,500 grant from The Ensworth Charitable Foundation to support its ALL IN! Coalition for College and Career Readiness. The grant will support Achieve Hartford's work with community partners to lead a comprehensive, citywide vision and strategy for boosting the number of Hartford Public School graduates who begin, persist in and complete post- secondary education and training. Sandy Hook Promise, a gun violence prevention nonprofit in Newtown, received a $25,000 donation from the Wireless Zone Foundation for Giving to support the training of youth and adults in four evidenced-based "Know the Signs" programs that have been proven to decrease violence, bullying, and other forms of victimization while strengthening school communities.
