The private college has launched a Property and Casualty Insurance Institute in an effort to prepare students for in-demand jobs within the insurance industry. The pre-apprenticeship initiative, school officials say, is an 18-credit program that can be completed in just over 22 weeks. Curriculum will be focused on preparing students for the state property and casualty insurance licensing exam. According to organizers, students will immediately be matched with 30-plus insurance agencies in Greater Hartford partnering with Goodwin College on the new initiative. The partnerships could lead to full-time employment opportunities. Study: CT beer industry generates $3.1B economic impact Connecticut's beer industry continues to be a major boon to the state's economy, according to a new study. The National Beer Wholesalers Association (NBWA) and the Beer Institute said it conducted a joint study that shows Connecticut's beer industry contributes $3.1 billion annually to the state's economy. That's a much higher estimate than the $745.7 million economic impact the industry generated in 2017, according to an analysis by the Brewers Association, which represents two-thirds of breweries in Connecticut. The study also said the industry supports 21,347 jobs in the state, which account for $1.1 billion a year in wages and benefits. Those jobs include three groups: brewers and importers; independent beer distributors; and licensed retailers. The number of breweries in Connecticut has grown significantly since 2011, when the state had 16 beer makers. At year-end 2018, 90 brewers were operating in Connecticut, according to the Brewers Association. UTC tops CT's list of Fortune 500 companies United Technologies Corp.'s recent $30 billion Rockwell Collins purchase has pushed the Farmington conglomerate atop Connecticut's list of Fortune 500 companies. In total, Fortune magazine's 2019 ranking listed 15 Connecticut companies among the nation's top 500, based on overall revenue. In 2018, Connecticut had 17 companies in the Fortune 500. With total revenue of $66.5 billion, UTC moved up five spots from last year to No. 46 due to its revenue growing by 11.1 percent. UTC, which employs about 240,200 people, in November completed its $30 billion acquisition of Iowa avionics manufacturer Rockwell Collins and announced plans to split into three separate companies by 2020. UTC's lead in Connecticut was also partially driven by Hartford health insurer Aetna, last year's leader, being acquired by Rhode Island-based CVS Health, which ranked No. 8. This marks UTC's 65th year on the list. Bloomfield health insurer Cigna, meantime, jumped up eight spots to No. 65 with revenue of $48.6 billion, a nearly 17 percent increase vs. last year. Cigna in late 2018 completed its $67 billion acquisition of pharmacy-benefit manager Express Scripts.
