Of course there can be no objective accounting of the "most powerful" people — the list is necessarily subjective. We also rec- ognize that power is fungible, and identifying who has it is necessarily a snapshot — it changes from week to week and year to year. Unlike the "Women Who Mean Business" celebrated in our March/April issue, these are not "awards" and the individuals profiled in these pages are not being honored — they're being recognized for who they are, what they do and why they're import- ant to the business community of the region and state. Because it lacks the corporate base of, say, a Hartford, power is diffuse in New Haven — vastly more so even than at the dawn of the 21st century. As large corpora- tions have changed hands or fled, non-profits, quasi-governmental entities and institutions of higher learning stepped into the breech. No better example exists than that of Yale University — which for centuries was aloof or even hostile toward its host city. And the Yale New Haven Health System, which has grown to dominate the Connecticut health-care industry through expansion and acquisitions Power in New Haven — and the players who wield it including St. Raphael's, Greenwich and Bridgeport hospitals. In journalism schools they teach budding Clark Kents to bow down before the altar of the "Four Ws" — who, what, when and where. ose are the building blocks of any cogent news story. But beyond those four Ws lies another dimension to the "news" — expressed as a fih W, and an H: Why, and How? No adult needs an explanation about why the mayor of New Haven is an important figure here, but what about a young woman who starts a non-profit to help girls and women build self-confi- dence to last a lifetime? University presidents have ample prestige and influence, but how about a blogger who provides information about state government that vast media conglomerates can't be bothered to report? ere are different kinds of pow- er — and the roster of human be- ings who wield it is vast and varied. With this issue we start a conversa- tion about who, what, when, where — and why and how. n — Michael C.
