Well, that is to say, as president of Yale University he's a figure of national or even international stature and influ- ence — but you're not likely to see him sorting through the tomatoes at Stop & Shop. He's beyond that. us it was something of a coup when the Greater New Haven Chamber of Commerce induced Salovey to keynote the business group's annual meeting lun- cheon May 3 at the Omni. Salovey was a big "get," but it's a big occasion — the event commemorates the 225th anniversary of the region's oldest and largest business group. If God wasn't available to keynote, Salovey was probably No. 2 on their list. What does the president of Yale have to do with the Cham- ber of Commerce, exactly? He's got "people" to handle things like that: Under Salovey's predecessor, Rick Levin, the university even established a new cabinet position — vice president of New Haven and state affairs — to handle the minutiae of dealing with the locals. But there's more: e person Levin tapped for that role — for- mer Rouse Co, executive Bruce Alexander — was instrumental in transforming the relationship be- tween town and gown, engaging the university more closely and actively in the civic and commercial life of the city it forsook Old Saybrook for way back in 1718. Today Yale is not only the city's largest employer, but also its largest landlord and has recast the face of downtown, most noticeably in the Chapel and Broadway retail districts (hello, Apple store and L.L. Bean). So, actually, Peter Salovey should say howdy to the local business folk every now and then. So now, it's now. Greater New Haven Chamber of Commerce Annual Meeting Luncheon, 11:30 a.m.-1:30 p.m. May 3 at Omni-New Haven Hotel at Yale, 155 Temple St., New Haven. $105 ($95 members). 203-787-6735, gnhcc.com. n Yale President Salovey will keynote the New Haven Chamber 225th anniversary fete May 3. On June 1 the Hamden Regional Chamber will host its 15th annual Business & Community Expo — with a twist. For 2019 the event will be incorporated within a larger event — Hamden Fest 2019, an annual daylong shindig that is expected to draw some 7,000 attendees to Hamden Town Center Park for food, folks, fun, a road race, cra fair, concert — and now, business. "We have opportunities for ev- ery business," said Nancy Dudchik, HRCC President. "With all the components of Hamden Fest, our Business and Community Expo will be the biggest and best it's ever been." Dudchik expects some 80 busi- ness exhibitors. Exhibitor spaces, sponsorship opportunities and premier locations remained avail- able at press time. Exhibitors must register no later than May 24.
