V I M A R C H 1 8 , 2 0 1 9 14 MMC announces $59M Scarborough medical office plan S C A R B O R O U G H — Maine Medical Center in Portland will invest $59 mil- lion in a new Maine Medical Partners office building at its Scarborough cam- pus as part of its overall expansion and modernization project. e new building, on which it hopes to break ground this fall, will house prac- tices including neurology; neurosurgery and spine; ear, nose and throat care; and vascular surgery. Completion is anticipated for early 2021. "is investment marks the next stage in our development of the Scarborough campus as a regional center for specialty medical care that is convenient for our patients, with easy highway access, ample parking and state-of-the-art facilities," said Jeff Sanders, president of Maine Medical Center. At MMC's Portland campus, the $525 million expansion underway will add private patient rooms as well as procedure rooms for surgeries and other complex treatments, provide an additional 225 spaces for patient and visitor parking, and consolidate staff parking into one nearby garage that will meet current demand and future growth. Maine Beer builds a better tasting room F R E E P O R T — When Dan Kleban first planned Maine Beer Co.'s Freeport location in 2013, the tasting room was originally going to be half the size of what was eventually built. It turned out that tasting room, which held about 40 people, wasn't enough, said Anne Marisic, market- ing and events manager. "ey had no idea what tasting room culture was going to be," she said. If the brewery's new tasting room is any indication, that culture means room for nearly 500 tasters in a bright, airy space that features a fountain with a bronze sculpture of a willow tree, a huge wood-fired pizza oven, 20 beers on tap and table shuffleboard upstairs on the mezzanine. e craft brewery, founded by broth- ers Dan and David Kleban, opened its new 6,000-square-foot tasting room in early March at its 525 U.S. Route 1 loca- tion. e space is in the old production area of the brewery. A 30,000-square- foot addition, which was finished last year, houses the brew works. "We've gone from very little space that was cramped for 50 to being in something that's comfort- able for 500,'' Marisic said. e work on the new produc- tion space started in 2017 and was finished last year, giving the brewery the capacity to quadruple its output. Maine Beer is the state's fourth-largest brewer, based on barrels produced. It produced 19,000 barrels last year. Its new production space allows for capacity of 50,000 barrels, though Marisic said it is in no rush to get there. e company also has a 30,000-square-foot storage and distribution site in Westbrook. Once the production area was completed, work on the tasting room started. e contractor was Mike Welsher, of Welsher Fine Homes of Freeport; Capozza Tile and Floor Covering Center supplied the tile and installation; Callahan & Lebleu, South Portland, did stonework and landscaping; White Light Visual of Beverly, Mass., did the signs and displays. e table and beer board are by Auburn-based os.
