n e w h a v e n b i z . c o m M a r c h / A p r i l 2 0 1 9 | n e w h a v e n B I Z 3 F R O M T H E E D I T O R I s it anachronistic to celebrate the achievements of outstanding business women, as we do in this month's special issue of New Haven BIZ, in this enlightened era? Or is singling out high- achieving females in the world of commerce simply a way of marginalizing them — e.g., women are not "regular" business people, but oddities worthy of grudging mention and maybe a pat on the head? Or is it merely sexist, plain and simple? We understand all those argu- ments, and all harbor a measure of truth and meaning. In New Haven particularly, females have been well represented among the highest ranks of business leaders for de- cades. Yale New Haven Health CEO Marna Borgstrom is one of the most accomplished health-care executives in the United States. At H. Pearce Co. and Fusco Corp., Barbara Pearce and Lynn Fusco have steered successful business empires on foundations laid by family forebears in traditionally male-dominated industries. For our inaugural "Women Who Mean Business" issue we sought to introduce you to seven highly accomplished females across the broadest spectrum of endeavor — from manufacturing to law to education to entrepreneurship. And in Mary Barneby, Jennifer Gerarda Brown, Evelyn Gard, Jill Mayer, Margaret Lee, Caroline Smith and Rolan Young we shine a spotlight on the achievements of women leaders beyond the "usual suspects" who are well known and deservedly admired throughout greater New Haven. In addition to feature stories about our six honorees, we have also for this issue chosen to high- light females in editorial sections previously populated by males. In DOWNTIME Andrea Kovacs, who has a high-powered, demanding day Why 'celebrate' women in 2019? job at Albertus Magnus College as a member of new AMC President Marc Camille's cabinet, powers down outside the office with a way- cool variant of non-power boating — stand up paddleboarding. In MY SWEET RIDE Lucille Jenkins of Guilford harnesses an altogether different source of power — 245 screaming horses generated by the 312-cubic-inch V8 in her '57 Ford underbird. Different power; equal in awesomeness. In our ARCHIVE feature we highlight a late, lamented New Ha- ven company that became a world leader in manufacturing imple- ments of torture for women. ese were known as corsets. at company's gone — nobody really makes corsets any more (sorry — Spanx don't count) for women. Not the literal kind. Not the figurative kind, either. n — Michael C.
