B I Z 13 JA N UA R Y 2 1 , 2 0 1 9 BUILDING BUSINESS CONTRACTORS RACKING UP THE MILES BETWEEN VARIOUS PROJECTS A number of contractors are logging miles between projects now underway. One such contractor is Westbrook- based Benchmark Construction, which has several multi-unit housing projects in the works. In Scarborough, it is the contractor for an affordable hous- ing conversion at Southgate House, a historic building at 577 U.S. Route 1 in Scarborough. e client is Portland- based Avesta Housing, which plans eight housing units in the main house and 30 in the addition under construction behind the main house. Others on the team are Goduti-Thomas Architects, Portland; Sebago Technics, South Portland; and R.W. Gillespie, Saco. In Auburn, Benchmark is the contrac- tor for the $6.6 million, three-building complex at 477 Minot Ave., which is being developed by Developers Collaborative. e designer is Archetype Architects of Portland. Plans call for 18 one-bedroom units, 10 two-bedroom units, and eight three-bedroom units. DC Management will manage the prop- erty and begin leasing in the summer. Other firms involved with the project are Stantec, of Scarborough; Haskell Inc., Falmouth; Summit Geoengineering Services, Lewiston; Structural Integrity, Portland; Bennett Engineering, Freeport. Benchmark is also the construction firm for a retail-and-affordable hous- ing project nearing completion at 62 Spring St. in Auburn. Hardypond Construction is winding down on the redevelopment of the former Foundation for Blood Research in Scarborough. e original buildings and land were purchased by Contour Properties LLC. e larger building was designed by Chris Briley of Portland-based Briburn Architects, while the smaller one was designed by Portland-based Caleb Johnson Studio. Hancock Lumber opened its Hancock Lumber Kitchen + Bath Center at 18 Yarmouth Crossing Drive, just off Main Street in Yarmouth. It now has showrooms in Kennebunk, Bridgton, Brunswick, Damariscotta and Yarmouth, as well as North Conway, N.H. A Windham store will open in February. Hancock has 10 lumber yards. Landry/French Construction of Scarborough has two public works buildings in the works in the towns of Scarborough and Wells. Site work is underway in Scarborough. e firm also hired Mike McLaughlin to be senior vice president of the new office in New Hampshire. He worked for Turner Construction and Commodore Builders. Site work has begun at the former Rufus Deering Lumber Co. site at 383 Commercial St. in Portland. A mixed-used development is planned, include condos, retail and a hotel. Consigli Construction is managing the project for the developer, Reger Dasco Properties. Elsewhere in Portland, Consigli is making progress on a 2,400-car parking garage for Maine Medical Center, Consigli's project executive, Matt Tonello, reports. AlliedCook Construction of Scarborough is busy expanding two Scarborough car dealerships: the Portland Volvo and the Jaguar-Land Rover dealership. AlliedCook has a bit of a specialty in this area, having done work for Berlin City Toyota, Scion and Lexus; Prime Toyota in Saco; Prime Mercedes-Benz in Scarborough; and Morong in Falmouth.
