Gov. Paul R. LePage and the Maine Department of Environmental Protection announced the recipients of the "2018 Governor's Award for Environmental Excellence." MoInlycke in Wiscasset won the "Sustainability Award," the Maine State Prison in Warren received the "Stewardship Award" and Inland Tech- nologies International in South Portland received the "Innovation Award." Vicki Losick, a scien- tist at MDI Biological Laboratory in Bar Harbor, was named the inaugural recip- ient of an award from the William Procter Scientific Innovation Fund, which will sup- port her research on age-related macular degeneration, a leading cause of vision loss in older people. e fund provides up to $50,000 annu- ally to support high risk/high impact research, basic research with potential for commercialization and education programs focused on translating dis- coveries into commercial applications. Berman & Simmons, a law firm in Portland, said six of its attorneys were included in the 2018 "New England Super Lawyers" list and another four were named "Rising Stars" in the publication. Day One, an agency in South Portland dedicated to addressing substance use and mental health needs among chil- dren and young adults, named Dianne Nason its "2018 Visionary Leadership Award" winner and Boys & Girls Clubs of Southern Maine its "2018 Impact Award" recipient at its 45th Annual Celebration. Kathryn Will-Dubyak, University of Maine at Farmington literacy educa- tion professor, was named a "2018 Bonnie Campbell Hill National Literacy Leader Award" winner by the Children's Literature Assembly at the National Council of Teacher Educators national conference in Houston, Texas. e university also said its educator preparation program received national accreditation from the Council for the Accreditation of Educator Preparation, the first insti- tution in the state of Maine to meet the new, rigorous national accredita- tion standards. In addition, the school received full approval for state accred- itation, including several commenda- tions, from the Maine State Board of Education and was named one of the most affordable LGBTQ-Friendly Colleges and Universities by Student Loan Hero, an online resource to help students live their best financial life. Deb Nelson, an integrative nutrition health coach in Yarmouth, published her first book, Finding Health After Cancer: Stories of Renewal and Healing. e book shares information about the different paths to health of 23 people who received a cancer diagnosis. John Diamond, president and executive director of the University of Maine Alumni Association in Orono, was selected as the 2018 recipient of the "Marvin D. 'Swede' Johnson Achievement Award" at the annual Higher Education Government Relations Conference in Atlanta, Ga. e award is given annu- ally for leadership in state relations and institutional advocacy, a field that encompasses advocacy and outreach efforts on behalf of colleges and universities to governors, state legisla- tors and other key policymakers and influencers.
