22 | HARTFORD BUSINESS JOURNAL • DECEMBER 24, 2018 Klingberg's mission is rooted in compassion. And for 115 years, our core belief has remained the same: children should be raised in a safe and loving home. Back in 1903, our founder, John Klingberg, took into his own home three abandoned boys. He then created the Children's Home, a large family for youngsters to grow up safely — which today has become the go-to place for behavioral health for children and youth. Klingberg is a leader in programs that restore families for children, or when that is not possible, provide an alternate family. Today, as a multi-social service organization, our caring and compassionate staff provide programs that include: outpatient therapy, a special education school, foster care and adoption services, mentoring, child abuse treat- ment, community services, and children's advocacy clinic. We work with children aged 3-18 and treat more than 2,500 individuals each year. Our focus on a specific age group and love for what we do means we use the most current protocols and best practices. We help children and families deal with such childhood behavioral problems as ADHD, anxiety, depression, trauma, school difficulties, and aggression. This is important work as a 2014 study cited by the National Children's Alliance found that nearly half of all children in the US have experienced some sort of trauma. But while techniques and services have evolved and expanded, two challenges that existed in the 1900s remain: the number of children in need and acquiring the funding to serve them. In the early years, Kling- berg's campus was a working farm and the children helped produce the food needed to feed 100 hungry mouths. Today, local, state and federal budgets are being squeezed while the needs of the community are so great. And with changes in family structure and a diverse population, the treatment needs and solutions are constantly growing and changing. The children we serve have begun their lives with a lack of self-confi- dence. Many are living below the poverty level. Many do not have posi- tive adult role models. To quote one of our graduating students, "When I came here I didn't feel like I was worth anything. Now I do." We help them find new ways to act and communicate and provide access to the services they need for a healthy, hopeful future. Our outreach also provides hope. For the past 26 years, we have de- veloped a unique family-oriented fundraiser in our Vintage Motorcar Event that has evolved into a series. Vintage motorcar owners care about history, and they all have stories to tell about their cars. Often the stories relate to a family member. The event attracts spectators to our campus to learn about what Klingberg does — serve families.
