United Technologies Corp. announced plans in November to split into three separate companies: United Technologies, which will feature its aerospace businesses; Carrier, which provides HVAC, refrigeration, building automation, fire safety and security products; and elevator, escalator and moving walkway manufacturer Otis. Stanley Black & Decker's new technology center, which includes an innovation lab and the Stanley+Techstars Additive Manufacturing Accelerator, partially debuted in downtown Hartford. Stanley also announced layoffs at the end of 2018 due to headwinds from tariffs and other factors. TRUMPF Inc. expanded its Farmington training center by 18,000 square feet as part of a $3 million investment meant to grow its training base for customers and future workers. Barnes Group paid $410 million to acquire Italian manufacturer Gimatic S.r.l, which makes robotic grippers for industrial automation.
