Habitat for Humanity of Greater Portland recognized Murray Plumb & Murray attorney John Shumadine with the "Spirit of Humanity Award" at its Raise the Roof dinner. Courtney Pladsen, a nurse practitioner at Greater Portland Health, was selected to participate in Culture of Health Leaders, one of the Robert Wood Johnson Foundation leadership develop- ment programs that equip and connect leaders across the country to collaborate in addressing systemic inequities and finding new solutions to the nation's most entrenched health challenges. NFI North Inc. presented Audrey Huot with its "Individual Spirit of the Community Award." Huot is office manager at Bridge Crossing and Dodge House School in Bridgton. Maine Development Foundation recog- nized Charlotte Mace, executive director of Biobased Maine, with its "Champion of Economic Development for Innovation Award." e U.S. Small Business Administration recently held a graduation ceremony for CEOs of Maine's first Emerging Leaders class. Pine Tree Legal Assistance in Lewiston named Hardy, Wolf, and Downing, a law firm in Lewiston, as its "1967 Commitment to Justice Award" recipi- ent and Sheldon Tepler, a partner at Hardy, Wolf, and Downing, its indi- vidual "Pro Bono Award" winner. AARP Maine selected Edwin Wright, a hun- ger prevention activist, as the winner of the "2018 Andrus Award." e award cel- ebrates and honors individuals who make a difference in the lives of others, and it is the most prestigious and visible award AARP can present to an individual. Geiger, a promotional products distribu- tor in Lewiston, presented its quarterly "Geiger Star Awards" to Gloria Arita and Louise Michaud. Arita is a help desk spe- cialist while Michaud is executive sup- port and corporate events manager. Maine State Chamber of Commerce pre- sented John Leonard with its "Alton 'Chuck' Cianchette Business Hall of Fame Award." Leonard was honored for his leadership and contributions to Maine, including during his 24-year tenure as president and CEO of MEMIC Group. Megan Williams, executive direc- tor of United Midcoast Charities in Camden, earned a certificate in non- profit management through the Maine Association of Nonprofits in partnership with MindEdge Learning. Marion Spurling: Education for Maine Islanders In 1984, a retired elementary school teacher from Islesford read about the Maine Community Foundation and decided she could make a difference too. Her $25,000 gi launched a scholarship in her and her older brother's name: the Marion and Irving Spurling Scholarship Fund. Over the years, the Spurling Scholarship has awarded more than $100,000 to 103 residents of Frenchboro, the Cranberry Isles, Swans Island, and Mount Desert Island for vocational training or education.
