"You cannot buy a haircut over Amazon," Gordon said. One strength MetroWest has is its diverse locations, he said. Where the eastern side, close to Route 128, offers easy access to Boston with high rents to match, the area around I-495 remains relatively inexpensive. Throughout the region, different buildings provide various arrays of amenities attractive to companies, depending on their unique needs. "Some people want to be near the Mass Pike exits," Gordon said. "Some people like signage or extra parking. Some want to be in buildings where they can network." Matthews said while the high-tech economy in the region has been booming since the 1980s, companies' space needs have changed. And devel- opers have responded. Atlantic Management of Framingham over- hauled the one-time Digital Equipment Corp. campus in Marlborough to house companies including GE Healthcare Life Sciences' North American headquarters. "It was a big office building sur- rounded by parking," Matthews said. The property is now a mixed-use development featuring residences and a hotel. And, thanks to an agreement with the City of Marlborough, it fea- tures bike-sharing as well, making it less dependent on cars. "That really epitomizes the next wave of development," Matthews said.
