I n June 2018, BTX Global Logistics opened its new world headquarters at 12 Commerce Drive in Shelton, marking the culmination of a nearly four-year process to find and upgrade the right space to house its administra- tive and logistics operations. e family-run company, which provides shipping, warehouse, ful- fillment and e-commerce services, spent a total of around $7 million on the project, including $3.85 million for the 75,000 square foot building, which is situated on five acres. Chris O'Hara, the senior vice president of Coldwell Banker Com- mercial NRT who helped BTX find If at first you don't succeed: BTX's long quest ends in Shelton and acquire the property, was well acquainted with the site. "I had sold it once before," he says. Built in the early 1980s for TIE/ communications Inc., a supplier of business-communications systems, 12 Commerce Drive was later occupied by Latex Foam Interna- tional Holdings, which leased the building following a devastating 2001 fire that destroyed nearly all of its Ansonia plant. When O'Hara began his search, BTX was leasing office space in Shelton, where the company also owned a small warehouse building. Anthony Bacarella, father of current BTX CEO and President Rosario (Ross) Bacarella, founded the company in 1980 as a shipping firm providing air service from a single office in Stratford. Over the decades, it grew into a full-ser- vice transportation and logistics organization with around 250 U.S. employees, 28 regional offices across North America, and strate- gic partners around the world. BTX specializes in transport- ing "time-sensitive, heavyweight" freight for industries including automotive, aerospace, medical equipment, retail and fine art. O'Hara's aim was to find a build- ing in the greater New Haven area that was big enough to house both BTX's corporate office and ware- house operations.
