Sears was Amazon.com a century before the technology that made Amazon.com possible could even be conceived of by humans. Instead of a website, there was the Sears catalog, which starting more than a century ago was mailed to every household in America. e Sears catalog was filled with page aer page of consumer products, from clothes to cookware to cur- tains, that consumers in some little jerkwater town could only dream of — products they would see in their tiny little general store only in their dreams. When the Sears catalog arrived in your mailbox, it was an event. It unlocked people's dreams. Sears built its own house brands into household names — Kenmore appliances, Crasman tools. One of Sears' most revolutionary innova- tions was a different kind of tool — the Sears credit card, which allowed consumers who maybe had no rea- son to have a bank account to buy things they had once only dreamed of without having the money right then and there to pay. You could even buy a house from the Sears catalog — a trim, tidy two-story home that would be shipped to you in sections by train to wherever you had dug a hole for your basement. Last month Sears declared bank- ruptcy, and it seems likely that the company that did so much to write the history of American retailing will now itself pass into history. All because they stopped innovating, and stopped adapting. New Haven Biz and our par- ent organization, New England Business Media, are in a different industry and operate on a vastly different scale than Sears, obviously. But we are here today because this The Change Imperative communications medium, and this organization, have adapted to changes in the world around us — changes in technology and changes in the way people get information. Not all of those changes are positive changes: Daily newspapers, which until recently published entire sections devoted to covering local business, don't do that job anymore. ere's an information black hole pertaining to local business, and we're here now to fill up that hole — to fill it with information that helps our readers run their companies better, and smarter. Information from our advertisers to let their clients know why they should buy from them, and not from their competitors. Unlike Sears, we're not going anywhere. ank you for standing with us.
