Generous training programs As companies transition to smart manufacturing, many have taken to reaching out to educational institutions regarding curriculum adjustments designed to meet specific needs. Lela Glikes-Foley is a program manager at the Greater Boston Manufacturing Partnership (GBMP) an organization dedicated to continuous improvement education, coaching, and facilitation. "We assist employers in getting grants for onsite training. For example, Boston Centerless received a two-year grant to work on employee training with the GBMT from the state of Massachusetts' workforce training funds," Glikes-Foley explains. Massachusetts offers one of the most generous workforce training grants of any state. "All employers pay into these funds but not all employers know what they can get back from it. It helps people who want to take advantage of our services," Glikes-Foley says. GBMP works with hundreds of companies every year pertaining to Toyota Production System so manufacturers can be globally competitive while staying here in Massachusetts. Many manufacturers have some type of incentive for the new employees they hire. For example, Thermo Fisher Scientific "All of our client companies are essentially paying for advanced learning for their employees, since they are employed at the company and the company pays for the training. We provide certificates for our training that can then be used by the employees as part of their ISO training requirements, job advancement, etc.." - Kathie Mahoney
