About a third of the coastal population lives in the Midcoast and Downeast areas, from Brunswick north and east. The population of the island communities swells in the summer, but the year-round population ranges from 1,165 on Vinalhaven to 47 on Great Cranberry Island. The findings below come from the Island Institute's annual "Waypoints" survey.
