B E S T P L A C E S TO W O R K 2 0 1 8 32 LARGE COMPANIES [ 250+ employees ] The single most important fac- tor contributing to Machias Savings Bank's success is its culture. And there's no doubt that the cul- ture, and the company, is successful because of its employees. MSB believes an exceptional banking relationship begins with hiring excep- tional people. Not only does MSB provide an opportunity for em- ployees to have chal- lenging, rewarding careers; it also fosters an environment where employees can main- tain a healthy balance between work, fam- ily and community involvement. Employee engagement is centered around a family-first philosophy and around providing great benefits. When employees excel, they're well reward- ed, and recognized through MSB's rewards and recognition program. Family flex time offers employees 16 hours each year to spend with family. They can take an elderly parent to the doctor, go on a school trip with their child or take their dog to the vet. The time is theirs to spend with family. Profit-sharing means that, when the bank does well, everyone is rewarded. Employees receive up to a 12% cash bonus, annually, based on the bank's overall performance. Each year, the en- tire bank gathers at an offsite location to celebrate the accom- plishments of the past year and to look for- ward to what the new year holds. Everyone enjoys games, entertainment and a great social time. Reward programs include the Edward L. Hennessey Volunteer of the Year Award, given annually to an employee who has spent many hours volunteering in the community and serving others. The winner is given $1,000 to be given to a charity of their choice. The President's Exceptional Service Award goes monthly to an employee who has provided a refreshingly dif- ferent customer service experience. The recipient receives a small trophy and a $500 bonus. Each year in September, MSB cel- ebrates employee appreciation week with games, prizes, give-aways and gifts, all set to a fun themes such as Throwback Thursday or Free Lunch Friday. MSB's Wellness Committee pays half the cost of chair massages. Inspirational moment activities in- volve departments and branches conducting quick team-building ex- ercises. MSB's Culture Club organizes Spring Fever Week – a week of fun events such as games, healthy snacks and a photo contest to usher in spring and beat the winter blues. Free or discounted tickets are provided to lo- cal family entertainment or sporting events. Machias Savings Bank P.O. Box 318 Machias, ME 04654 Top local executive: Larry L.
