quality of life increasingly important for people choosing where to live and work, businesses can quickly understand the important role Maine nonprofi ts play in building a strong and sustainable economy. A thriving non- profi t sector, working as a valued partner with business and government, is integral to the state's future prosperity. Mainers rely on nonprofi ts every day to safeguard our health, educate our children, nurture our hearts and minds, protect our environment, and provide opportunities for civic engagement. Yet economic challenges loom. Like our business and government counter- parts, Maine nonprofi ts face an increasingly competitive workforce environment, demographic shifts, rising health care costs and signifi cant leadership transition. Changes in philanthropic giving, declining government support and increasing demand for services all threaten the nonprofi t sector. Healthy relationships among business, government and nonprofi ts are funda- mental to a thriving society. Government turns to nonprofi ts to provide essential services to citizens and to fulfi ll commitments and programs established by poli- cymakers. Nonprofi ts collaborate with businesses to revitalize communities and participate in economic development. Working together, we identify problems and implement innovative solutions. One in six Maine workers is employed by a nonprofi t, accounting for 17.5% of the state's total payroll. Maine's unique challenge is that 75% of our nonprofi ts have annual budgets under $100,000 and 89% have budgets under $500,000. Many need professional support to function eff ectively and effi ciently. at's where the Maine Association of Nonprofi ts steps in. Our job is to strengthen the leadership, voice and organizational eff ectiveness of our state's nonprofi ts. Over 25 years, MANP has built the state's largest nonprofi t network with a reputation for high-quality advocacy, education and support services. We are the state's comprehensive resource for the tools, knowledge, and connections nonprofi ts need to be eff ective and well-run, providing new and seasoned non- profi t professionals and volunteers with in-depth trainings, peer connections, updates on national trends, answers to management questions, a high-traffi c job board, assessment tools, guidebooks and data on the economic and social signifi cance of Maine nonprofi ts. We help nonprofi ts help Maine. Every day, we see Maine's nonprofi ts adapt, innovate and economize. It is crit- ically important for citizens, business leaders, and policymakers to recognize how nonprofi ts impact our lives and our economy and commit to supporting them in their work: as champions, volunteers, donors and partners. We are pleased to be partnering again with Mainebiz on the Giving Guide. If it inspires you, contact your local legislators to remind them of the value of nonprofi ts, ask your employer about the company's philanthropic support, volunteer, or consider nonprofi t board service. Let's build a prosperous Maine together. Jennifer Hutchins Executive Director Maine Association of Nonprofi ts FROM THE GIVING GUIDE PARTNER
