Kennebunkport to purchase 85-acre downtown parcel Voters in Kennebunkport on Sept. 19 authorized the town to purchase an undeveloped 85-acre lot on North Street for $10 million, but it's not yet clear what will be done with the land. About two- thirds of the 150 residents attending a special town meeting approved a warrant for the purchase, the York County Coast Star reported. e parcel, across from a fire station and less than a mile from the downtown area, has been owned since 2006 by CDMK, a Massachusetts developer. CDMK received approval that year to build a phased subdivision of 80 residential units, to be called Olde Port Village, but plans stalled. e approval allows the town to negotiate purchase of the property for $10 million, which would be bonded over 20 years, and to spend $100,000 in undesignated funds to cover legal costs. e bond would add 36 cents to the town's property tax rate, or about $36 per year on a $100,000 valuation. Ready Seafood lobster plant approved e Saco Planning Board gave final approval to Ready Seafood Co. to build a lobster processing plant. e Portland Press Herald reported that the Ready Seafood, which is based in Portland, plans to break ground Oct. 1. In mid- September, Canada's Premium Brands Holding Corp. (TSX: PBH) completed its acquisition of Ready Seafood, putting the Portland-based brand under the same ownership as Hub City Fisheries and Diana Seafood. The Vancouver- based buyer said it will retain John and Brendan Ready as partners as well as the company›s three production facilities in Maine. Ready Seafood buys and sells over 15 million pounds of live and pro- cessed lobster a year. N O T E W O R T H Y S O U T H E R N Manomet, a nonprofit in Brunswick, was awarded a $267,440 grant by the National Oceanic and Atmospheric Administration Saltonstall-Kennedy Grant Program to expand work to develop a green crab fishery in New England and provide a new source of economic opportunity for fishers and coastal communities. Waynflete, a private school in Portland, opened its new Lower School, which includes a 28,000-square-foot addition built to Passive House standards. The addition, along with renovations to the existing building, doubles the square footage of the previous school. Oakhurst Dairy in Portland announced a matching challenge gift to Good Shepherd Food Bank's capital campaign and will match donations to the cam- paign dollar-for-dollar, up to $50,000. The Maine Association of Mortgage Professionals in Portland presented a $15,000 check to Camp Sunshine, reflective of funds raised at its annual charity golf tournament. That amount is enough to send six children with life-threatening illnesses and their families to the camp. Patco Construction in Sanford part- nered with Waban, a local community organization that supports adults and children with special needs, to build and install a new playground structure at its Fraser-Ford Child Development Center. The National Institutes of Health awarded Maine Medical Center's research institute and its partnering institution, the University of Vermont, a $339,000 grant to study the impact that stricter opioid prescribing laws have had on population health in northern New England. AmeriDown Factory Outlet, a retailer specializing in bedding, bath and home furnishing needs, opened at Outlets at Kittery. Waterville manufacturer expects to add 150 jobs A Waterville manufacturing firm that was named Maine's third fastest- growing company by Inc. magazine said it plans to add 60 jobs by the end of the year and another 90 next year.
