Recipients included T&D Wood Energy, Sanford, $200,000; Gary's Auto and RV Sales and Gagnon's Rental Properties, Connor, $66,000; Mook Sea Farms, Walpole, $49,597; Rainbow Valley Farm, Sidney, $34,433; Labrie Farms, St. Agatha, $30,000; Maple Crest Farm, Hermon, $21,506; Buck's Naked BBQ, Freeport, $19,496; Split Rock Distillery, Newcastle, $6,465; and Porchside Veterinary Care, Dresden, $4,228. The Department of Justice's Legal Assistance for Victims Grant Program and Improving Criminal Justice Responses Program awarded a total of $1.1 million to two Maine nonprofit or- ganizations. Caring Unlimited Corp. in Sanford received $599,526 to increase safety from intimate violence by effec- tively ensuring continued access to civil legal assistance for low-income and rural victims of domestic violence, sex- ual assault and stalking who need, but cannot afford, to hire a lawyer to pro- tect themselves. In addition, Next Step Domestic Violence Project in Ellsworth received $578,268 to provide attorney representation and consultation as well as legal advocacy and court accompa- niment for matters related to and/or arising from domestic violence. Navatek Ltd, a research and devel- opment company based in Hawaii, recently opened offices in Portland and Orono and hired 16 scientists and engineers, nine of whom are recent graduates of the University of Maine's engineering program. Eimskip USA's managing director steps down After nine years of leadership at Icelandic shipping company Eimskip USA, Larus Isfeld is stepping down as managing director. Eimskip said that Andrew Haines, vice president of marketing and sales, will serve as interim manager during the transi- tion, amid the company's plans to expand its port operations in Portland as part of the company's global net- work.
