U.S. Department of Agriculture award- ed a total of $266,199 to three Maine snowmobile clubs through its Rural Business Development Grant program to support Maine's snowmobile indus- try and help to promote the develop- ment of small and emerging busi- nesses in rural areas. Pleasant Ridge Riders Snowmobile Club in Caswell re- ceived $99,999; Corundel Raiders in Corinna, $96,200; and Border Riders Sportsman Club Inc. in Dennistown received $70,000. All three clubs will use the funding to purchase snowmo- bile trail grooming equipment. Mixed-use proposal moves forward in Biddeford Biddeford has started talks with devel- opers Jim Brady and Brian Eng to turn part of its former waste-to-energy incinerator site into a mixed-use area. e site, at 3 Lincoln St., was recently proposed as the site of the city's first parking garage. It was the former home of the Maine Energy Recovery Co. plant, purchased by the city in 2012 for $6.65 million. A parking garage is due to be built there by early 2020. e city said the developers will explore options for developing the rest of the site, and how it can "blend seamlessly with a new parking structure" and ongoing devel- opment in the Mill District. Two years prison for embezzlement case A 46-year-old Scarborough woman was sentenced in federal court to two years in prison and three years of super- vised release for embezzling from two health care providers. Judge John A. Woodcock Jr. from the U.S. District Court also ordered Carrie Caporino to pay $549,469 in restitution, according to a news release from the office of U.S. Attorney Halsey B. Frank. Caporino pleaded guilty to the charges on April 30. Between 2014 and November 2016, Caporino worked as the office manager for a southern Maine dental practice and embezzled more than $293,000 by using office credit cards for personal expenses, using the office checkbook to pay rent and other personal expenses and by making internet transfers from an office bank account to pay a personal credit card and her PayPal account. Between December 2016 and 2017, Caporino was the office manager for a Falmouth physician and embezzled more than $255,000 from his practice by stealing checks mailed to the office by patients and insurance companies and then depositing them to her own bank accounts using her smartphone.
