ASSOCIATE DEAN OF STUDENTS JESSICA MORRIS AND ALL THE FORTY UNDER 40 RECIPIENTS! Gilchrist became medical director of a large practice within just three years of graduating residency. He's turned Hahnemann Family Health Center around from a struggling clinic to a model clinic for UMass Memorial Health Care. The year before Gilchrist took over as medical director, the clinic was 10 percent behind budget in revenue and volume. At the end of his first year as medical director, the clinic was 10 percent ahead of budget for revenue and volume. The clinic serves the most vulnerable populations in the area, as the clientele are socially and economically diverse. In addition to his work at Hahnemann and UMass Memorial, Gilchrist has led efforts to help combat the opioid crisis, a topic on which he speaks regionally and nationally. He's previously done work at detox facilities with Adcare Hospital and Community HealthLink, caring for adults and adolescents struggling with addiction. Gilchrist was elected as president to the Massachusetts Academy of Family Physicians, becoming just the first person younger than 40 to hold that title. In that role, he advocates for patients and physicians. – Z.C. From judge Milka Njoroge: "As a physician, David provides direct patient care while also impacting the community through his leadership at Hahnemann Family Health Center." What will the title and tagline be of the movie about you? "Maximizing Efficiency: How to squeeze more stuff into an already busy day." It will probably be more of a documentary than a drama. If you could go back in time, when would you go back to? I would not choose to go back in time. I am always thinking about the future and how innovations will shape that future. Who is most responsible for your achievements? My mother. She instilled a sense of hard work and overcoming challenges at a very young age. David Gilchrist, MD, MBA, 38 Medical director Hahnemann Family Health Center, Worcester Lives: Holden Birthplace: Melrose Colleges: Gordon College, UMass Medical School, UMass School of Business Pelley has lived and worked in other states, like North Carolina and California, but she was attracted back to Massachusetts – where she was raised in Leicester – because of the state's dedication to health care, including a commitment to improving health outcomes for everyone. That's critical to Pelley, who helps oversee 300 employees caring for 27,000 patients a year. Pelley – who calls herself an introvert who proves quiet leadership isn't an oxymoron – feels there will always be a need for healthcare leaders who are passionate about serving vulnerable populations. Before joining the Kennedy CHC, Pelley taught in Richmond, Calif., for Teach for America, a program placing teachers in high-need school districts, where she saw what communities without adequate healthcare offerings look like. From there, Pelley completed an administrative fellowship at Brigham and Women's Hospital in Boston. Pelley manages Kennedy CHC's school-based health centers and mentors interns. She is a committee member for Worcester Public Schools and the Coalition for a Healthy Greater Worcester. – G.W. From judge Milka Njoroge: "Courtney is an emerging leader who understands the importance of collaboration and inclusiveness and is a strong advocate for the underserved." Were you a straight-A student? K-12, yes – except for chemistry. What did I end up teaching? Chemistry. Go figure! It's true: The best way to learn is to teach. If you could go on a road trip with any four people, who would they be? Dad (#MacGyver), Mom (can drive on EITHER side), The Little Mermaid (to see our world through her eyes) and James Corden (Carpool Karaoke – Disney Sing-Along Edition), all in an SUV version of the DeLorean time machine. Courtney E. Pelley, 32 Chief of staff Edward M. Kennedy Community Health Center, Worcester Lives: Leicester Birthplace: Worcester Colleges: Wellesley College, Wake Forest University
