I have "shown up" every day at my own business, earlier than any employee and stayed later too. ey should be ready to work harder than they ever imagined. Life is not a fairy tale. What's changed: Going through the downturns in recent years actu- ally made us a stronger, more focused company. I am proud of the fact that we did not lay-off any key manage- ment or supervision and we did not cut salaries or benefi ts! ere were some lean years, but we took care of our employees. e workforce is changing, with younger workers, with diff erent types of experiences. I serve on the board of visitors and the College of Engineering dean's advisory board at the University of Maine; I'm on the board of direc- tors for the Royal River Conservation Trust and just recently ended a fi ve-year run on a town committee in Yarmouth. What's ahead: Retirement! While I love what I do, I'm ready to begin the transition of ownership and leadership to my very capable business partners. I've got lots of interests and am looking ahead to the next chapter. Advice: Find a group of women you can trust, and build a long-term group relationship to assist you with the many business transitions and situations that happen in a career. One of the most helpful things for me was fi nding a peer group of women presidents/business owners/ leaders. We meet bi-monthly to discuss our businesses. Other advice: Collaborate. Be thoughtful and deliberative in your decision-making. Know and believe that there is room for women at the executive table! F I L E P H O T O / DAV I D A . What's changed: We've been through a prolonged industrial recession after the fi nancial meltdown in 200-09, which had a dampening on our cus- tomers. We survived but it slowed our growth plans. What's ahead: Great things — we're refreshing our production capabilities with new equipment, new processes and new products. Advice: As my mom often reminded me, "You can do anything you want if you put your mind to it." Remind yourself of that often so you don't give up on your dreams. Pay attention to changes around you; be ready to change accordingly; and always do your homework!
