X V I I § 2 A U G U S T 6 , 2 0 1 8 4 T en years ago I stood with our then-editor Carol Coultas, staring at several issues of Mainebiz that were arranged on the confer- ence room table."Where are the women?" we asked ourselves. At the time, we were coming out of the recession and news stories reported how women-owned businesses had fared bet- ter than men-owned businesses. And more women-owned businesses were starting up, as the established ones kept growing. So we asked again, "Where are the women in the pages of Mainebiz?" Had we overlooked something? Or were the women operating under the radar? I suppose both were true. So that's when we decided to launch the honoree program of Women to Watch: to identify and recognize women business leaders in Maine, to get them into the pages of Mainebiz and to make sure our coverage of business in Maine was more gender balanced. But we had a conundrum. How do we recognize women in business without being condescending? How do we point out their success and tell their stories without mar- ginalizing them? "A successful woman? Oh my, what a surprise." at would not do. We set out to tell stories of successful business leaders, who happened to be women: how they started, how they have coped with challenges, how they have innovated, what inspires them. Many own and manage busi- nesses in industries that aren't considered "traditional" for women — whatever that means. For 10 years we have put out the call for nominations and are always blown away by the numbers of women business leaders who are brought to our attention. at tells us that women are indeed operating under the radar, and we are proud to have been able to recognize their achievements. Now at the 10-year mark, Mainebiz Editor Peter Van Allen and his staff have reached out to all Women to Watch alumni to fi nd out where they are now. It allows us to continue to tell their stories, and for our readers to get an updated report on these women and their amazing careers. What started in that conference room 10 years ago has grown to a network of nearly 50 women. We will be celebrating with them, and with our 201 Women to Watch honorees at a reception on September 25th.
