W W W. M A I N E B I Z . B I Z 13 A U G U S T 6 , 2 0 1 8 F I L E P H O T O / A M B E R WAT E R M A N Dr. Lisa Letourneau Associate medical director / Maine Quality Counts What's changed: Since 2012, I've had some amazing opportunities and made several important changes, both personally and professionally. As we neared the second college graduation (and end of tuition payments!) of our young adult kids, my husband and I decided to take a "Gap Year for Grown- ups" and take the time to have a year of physical adventures, inspired by my daughter. With an understandable mix of trepidation and excitement, we both left our jobs at the end of 2016, and spent an amazing year in 2017 having an incredible set of adventures biking, hiking, and walking in a wide range of settings around the world. What's ahead: I'm now very grateful to be back with Maine Quality Counts, working part-time in the role of associate medical director and focused primarily on work to address the opioid epidemic. Maine and the United States are still very much in the grip of this terrible epidemic, and I'm grateful for the opportunity to bring my clinical and public health experience together to find new solutions to address it. Advice: One, don't think you have to figure out your career/purpose in life all at once (or that your career needs to be a straight path). Two, have the courage to take a chance: I'd encourage young women to get comfortable with uncertainty and work on building the courage to step off the path when they find themselves inspired about new opportunities — even when they may not always know what's next. F I L E P H O T O / T I M G R E E N WAY Melissa Smith President and CEO / WEX Inc. What the company does: Payment processing systems What's changed: What hasn't changed? I'm OK with change. I married Brian Corcoran and we now have three children. I was named the president and CEO of WEX. WEX has grown to be a $1.25 billion com- pany. I've participated in more than a dozen triathlons and road races, including Tri for a Cure (WEX is the presenting sponsor) each year except the year I was expecting my first child. I was incredibly honored to be named a Business Leader of the Year by Mainebiz in 2017. What's ahead: More change. You can depend on it. WEX is on its way to being a $2 billion company. We will move into our new global headquarters in downtown Portland in 2019. More time with my family. Advice: Stay results-oriented. Set high standards for yourself but stay grounded. No project or task is too large if you break it down into smaller pieces at the end of the day. Every day. Remember it all starts and ends with people and how you build trusting relationships. GREAT PLACE TO LIVE GREAT PLACE TO WORK We are a global company that is honored to call Maine our home, and even more honored to have recently been certifi ed a Great Place to Work®.
