In 201, countervailing duty orders were issued on supercalendered paper imports from Canada, according to a news release issued by U.S. Sen. Susan Collins, R-Maine. Supercalendered paper is the glossy stock often used for magazines and newspaper supplements. Verso (NYSE: VRS), the last U.S. producer of the paper, has annual net sales of 2. bil- lion and operates a total of seven mills. Hannaford opens Mechanic Falls store Hannaford Supermarkets will open a 20,000-square-foot store in Mechanic Falls on July 28. e supermarket and pharmacy at 28 Pigeon Hill Road will employ between 80 and 100 full-time and part-time workers, the company said in a news release. It will be the grocery chain's fi rst new store in Maine since 201, when it opened a small-for- mat store in North Berwick. e North Berwick store is about the same size as the Mechanic Falls site, according to the Hannaford website. Hannaford, founded in Portland in 188 and based in Scarborough, employs 26,000 people in New England and New York. It has 6 stores in Maine and a total of 181. e chain is owned by the Dutch supermar- ket holding company Ahold Delhaize, which has 6,00 stores worldwide. N O T E W O R T H Y C E N T R A L & W E S T E R N Dennis Keller State Farm Agency moved to 38 Bangor St. in Augusta. $200M JAX facility set to open in Ellsworth e Jackson Laboratory, the Bar Harbor-based biomedical research insti- tution, will open the fi rst phase of a new 200 million mouse-breeding facility in Ellsworth next month. e Bangor Daily News reported that JAX will cel- ebrate the opening of its new Kingsland Crossing building, formerly a Lowe's Home Improvement store, at a private ribbon cutting on Aug. 2. e four- phase project broke ground two years ago. By 2026, when it is complete, the 208,000-square-foot facility is expected to create up to 0 local jobs. JAX cur- rently employs about 1,800 people, including 1,200 in Bar Harbor. More riders boarding Acadia bus service Acadia National Park's free bus ser- vice saw an increase in usage in its fi rst two weeks. e Bangor Daily News reported that from the season's beginning, June 2 to July , Island Explorer buses carried 66,276 pas- sengers, a 4% increase over ridership during that period last year, Island Explorer Executive Director Paul Murphy said. e bus service travels 10 routes throughout Mount Desert Island and the Schoodic Peninsula, linking hotels, campgrounds, points within the national park and down- town Bar Harbor. e rise in rider- ship comes as Bar Harbor grapples with decisions about the crowds who throng the town each summer. e town is an increasingly busy port of call for cruise ships, 180 of which are expected this year — 14 more than last year, and disembarking 6,000 more passengers. Bucksport salmon farm bolsters staff Whole Oceans, a Maine company that is planning to build a 7 mil- lion land-based aquafarm to raise Atlantic salmon in Bucksport, hired Eric Jacobsson as CFO and Joe McElwee as its chief production offi cer. Jacobsson came from Pentair Water, while McElwee came from Pentair Aquatic Eco-Systems. In February, Whole Oceans announced its plans to purchase most of the for- mer Verso paper mill site in Bucksport and build a land-based aquafarm there to raise Atlantic salmon. CEO Rob Piasio, a specialist in land-based aqua- culture technologies, species, markets, distribution and personnel who grew up in Yarmouth, said at that time the company plans a phased investment at Bucksport and projects that at full production its aquafarm will create hundreds of direct jobs.
