Under the terms of the agreement announced on May 25, ND Paper paid $175 million for the two pulp and paper mills. e acquisition is expected to boost Nine Dragons' performance in the second half of cal- endar 2018. e Rumford mill, which employs about 620 people, will now be known as ND Paper — Rumford Mill. e Lewiston Sun Journal reported that a company spokesman said there would be no layoffs, adding that ND Paper planned to make investments to improve the mills' capabilities. U.S. Sens. Susan Collins and Angus King announced that the U.S. Department of Health and Human Services awarded $1 million to the Maine Primary Care Association in Augusta through the Department's Health Resources and Services Administration. The University of Maine at Augusta renewed its relationship with eight University College Centers, which will be known as UMA Centers. The cen- ters, mostly utilized by current UMA students taking part in distance edu- cation or onsite classes, are located in Brunswick, Ellsworth, East Millinocket, Houlton, Rockland, Rumford, Saco and South Paris. The state of Maine received nearly $49 million from the Department of Veterans Affairs to support the construction of a new 138-bed nursing home in Augusta that Maine Veterans' Homes is building that will replace an older facility. Pyro City Fireworks opened at 442 Madison Ave. in Skowhegan. Pocket Parks Campgrounds, a Winthrop startup creating a brand of affordable "pocket" campgrounds that cater to wilderness adventure camp- ers, opened its first location at 574 U.S. Route 1 in Gouldsboro. Acadia National Park on track for record year A strong May put Acadia National Park on pace for a record year of attendance. e Mount Desert Islander said May's 11.6% increase from the same month last year pushed the year-to-date attendance 3% higher than 2017, a record year. By November 2017, the number of visitors to Acadia was nearly 3.5 million, a record that eclipsed 2016's then-record of 3.3 million. Acadia's Mount Desert Island section saw 2.91 million visitors, up 0.9% over the same period last year, while Schoodic section of the park saw a 4.1% increase to 293,933; visitation to Isle au Haut was up 1%, to 8,781. The scholarships, made pos- sible by the Island Education Fund, totaled $50,900. Acadia School of Traditional Music and Arts in Ellsworth was recently approved as a federally recognized 501(c)(3) organization. The MDI Biological Laboratory in Bar Harbor announced that it received more than $70,000 in cash and in-kind awards for its inaugural Applications of Organoid Technology course held recent- ly. The awards included contributions from Baker, Corning, the Cystic Fibrosis Foundation, Nikon, Leica, Novartis Pharmaceuticals Corp., STEMCELL Technologies, Fisher Scientific and ThermoFisher Scientific.
